Birmingham's past undoubtably goes back as far as the Bronze age and beyond. However, very little remains from this era except the scattered flint stones and bronze artifacts that can be found in the city museum. Early Roman military roads have passed through the region. Anglo-Saxon tribes started to settle in the region around 700 A.D. Tribes such as the Hwicce and Anglian Mercians started to make the area their permanent home

With city status Birmingham continued to expand. New parks, swimming baths, libraries and entertainment venues were built in the city. Joseph Chamberlain originally a Londoner, took the city to new heights. The Council House, The Museum and Art Gallery, the elaborate buildings in Birmingham University were all projects under the vision of Chamberlain. Borrowing heavily and using finance from the commercial sector the Birmingham Corporation transformed the city

The 1970's, the strikes, the depression of the car and manufacturing industry. This city has suffered. Then, slowly at first, the mourning of bygone times changed to a yearning for action. With it's new economic strategy now in place the whole of the West Midlands is awakening and attracting the inward investment it so desperately needed. Now the most successful region for attracting inward investment it has a host of successful ventures behind it.

Birmingham now has the largest professional and financial sector outside of London. Recognised and voted best region for relocation the West Midlands is top of the list of desirable business locations among CBI delegates. It is a city of international status, A city that has adapted to change and no longer totally reliant on manufacturing and industrial means for it's survival. It is a centre of excellence for today's modern business.

The 1990's have seen whole urban areas ripped apart and restyled as the city revitalises its heartland. Birmingham is set to become a premier league city amongst the great European cities of the millenium. |
