Newcastle has come a long way in the last few years with the swish apartments on regnerated Quayside and the largest shopping centre in Europe, the metro Centre at Gateside. It is small city and generally easy to get around and it now has a lively cultural, social and commercial life.

Newcastle-upon-Tyne, more commonly referred to as simply Newcastle, is the largest city in the north-east of England. In particular Newcastle has recently become synonymous with shopping. With several huge shopping centres, including Europe's largest, the city has become a Mecca for shopoholics all over the country. And with a buzzing nightlife and excellent cultural scene it is now one of the UK's trendiest cities, and definitely worth a visit.

Wander down to the transformed waterfront, the Quayside, now lined with stylish hotels, designer bars, restaurants and public art. The Gateshead Millennium Bridge, a work of art in itself, arches across the Tyne to link the City to Gateshead Quays and the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art.

There is a real buzz around Newcastle. The city is the regional focus for drama, music, comedy and the arts. Our magnificent Theatre Royal is the third home to the Royal Shakespeare company and the major touring artists from Pavorotti to S Club Seven have all performed at the Telewest Arena or City Hall.

Laing Art Gallery, Hancock Museum and the two University galleries host exhibitions of international importance. Out in the community, our local culture is reflected in venues like Live Theatre and the Cluny and in events like the Mela (Asian Festival), the Green Festival and the Irish Festival. Wander into a city pub and there can be live music from jazz to garage. Bands perform around the City on sunny Saturdays and buskers (some pretty talented) enliven our Metro stations.
